The Role of Sensory Processing in Picky Eating

For many children, especially those with sensory sensitivities, eating isn’t just about hunger—it’s a full-body experience. The texture, smell, colour, and even the sound of certain foods can trigger discomfort or overwhelm them.


Here’s how sensory processing can impact eating habits:

  • Texture Sensitivity: Foods that are mushy, crunchy, or sticky might feel uncomfortable in the mouth.

  • Smell Sensitivity: Strong odors, even from foods they used to enjoy, can be off-putting.

  • Visual Overload: A plate full of mixed foods or unfamiliar colors can feel overwhelming.

  • Taste Sensitivity: Some children have heightened taste perception, making certain flavours feel too intense.


Fear of the Unknown (Food Neophobia)

Some kids are naturally cautious when it comes to trying new foods. This is called food neophobia, and it’s actually a normal stage of development. However, for some children, this fear lingers, making mealtimes stressful.


Instead of forcing them to eat something new, try these strategies:

  • Make It Familiar: Introduce new foods alongside their favourites.

  • No Pressure: Allow them to explore at their own pace without requiring a bite.

  • Engage Their Senses: Let them touch, smell, or even help prepare the food before tasting.



Setting Realistic Mealtime Goals
